There are short narratives by children recounting experiences of long hospitalizations and lengthy treatments and surgeries, a memoir of an adult about the childhood experience of loss and sorrow through the death of his father, and others which chronicle the lingering effects of traumatic childhoods which have resulted in psychological problems and even psychosis. There are several accounts of troublings experiences of chronic pain. One dramatic narrative is that of a lawyer who suffers from a progressive genetic disease that has left him paralyzed. He has, however, mastered his life and is able to teach full time in a university. The book concludes with two accounts of the experience of two women who cared for dying friends.

Ultimately, this book treats of the dynamic human story of these authors as they struggle, confront, and eventually come to at least a partial understanding of what illness and loss have meant and means in their lives.

About the Author
Jeanine Young-Mason, RN,EdD,CS,FAAN is Professor, School of Nursing University of Massachusetts Amherst where she teaches psychiatric-mental health nursing, writing, consultation in advanced practice nursing and qualitative research. In all of her courses she uses art, literature, drama, film and published autobiographical narratives of psychiatric and somatic illness to help undergraduate and graduate nursing students better understand the human condition. Art, literature, and autobiographical accounts bring essential knowledge to the health care professional's education and practice, knowledge that is unobtainable in ordinary textbooks. This knowledge is, of course, a deeper understanding of suffering and its implications for health and life. It is about the valuing of that suffering and the intrinsic human need for compassion. It is also true that the arts have a power to heal through entertainment and laughter, illumination and wisdom.

I required this book for several years teaching nursing students in my chronic illness and death and dying courses. Not only do the students love it and relate to the patients' stories, they learn concepts of care grounded in these stories. A powerful and inspiring book.

'Forced' of Arms

I enjoy alternate history books and especially about the Civil War. But this book is ludicrous. Every piece of luck, turn of fate, last minute re-inforcements, equipment advantage, leadership abilities, skill of foot soldier, artillerymen, calvary and geralship belongs to the south. The northern leadership is always bumbling, stupid, drunk or incompetent. The book constantly raves about the advantage of the north in equipment, men, material, weapons and transportation abilities. But while talked about those advantages never appear in any of the battles. The south has gatling guns by the score, submarines,iron clads, cannons galore and their artillerymen are the best 'sharpshooters' the world has ever seen. The north can have a general up in an air ballon viewing all the battle field, yet he makes all the wrong moves. The south has generals who can only see whats around them, yet they make tactical decisions as if they had a satellite in space giving them real time views. John Wilkes Booth, the most famous actor of his era, can waltz into the White House, kidnap the President and no one recognizes him. In the battles the south is always in a defensive mode and the north marches right at them as they did at Fredericksburg. Every single battle is like that. The only 'advantage' the books shows for the north is the amount of men that get slauthered in these suicide attacks.

I too have felt the battle at Gettysburg would probably have ended differently if Jackson had not been killed by his own men. But this book takes it way to far. The north did have more men, transportation, material and strong leadership at the top than the south did. And those advantages did make a difference in the out come of the war. A more balanced telling would have made this a good book. As written, it is a disappointment.

And I gave it two stars. One because I had to at least give it one star. The second star is actually for me because I read the entire book.....

CAN ONLY BE READ BY FORCE

I love reading alternative history, as implausible as some of it may be. This book, needless to say, caught my eye and seemed like a good read; well I can't be right all the time. As stated in other reviews, the South has amazing luck, good fortune, the grace of the gods and a knack for always doing the correct thing and of course, they are all gentlemen.
I have to say that the book got rather boring and predictable; the South always got the better of the North and the commanders always "emptied their revolvers and drew their sabers" time and time again.
I got two-thirds of the way through and stopped, I no longer found it enjoyable to read. The number of books that I have not read to the end can be counted on one hand; this book has joined that small group.
I will only briefly mentioned how distracting it was to come across grammatical and errors of punctuation time and again; and of course there was the instance when President Grant was given papers to sign (Sherman is the President).
I have never written a review but felt I had to so, so that perspective buyers of this book are warned. This book had such potential, but alas, it was not meant to be.

President Sherman???

Possibly I should not be reviewing/rating this book since I did not actually read the whole book. I read the first few chapters and then skipped to the end to get an idea how the story came out. The basic premise established in the early chapters was so implausible that I didn't feel like plowing through the rest of the book.
The premise is: The South has won the Civil War, due to the battle of Gettysburg turning out differently, and the Confederacy has established its de facto independence, though the Union does not officially recognize it. That's not the implausible part. The part I can't swallow is: The story picks up in 1869, after former Union general William T. Sherman has been elected President of the Union on a platform of revenge against the Confederacy. Now one of the best known facts about the real-life Gen. Sherman is that he was the most non-political of generals. He despised politics and politicians (even Lincoln, at first, though he later came to respect him). After the Civil War, when offered the chance to run for political office, Sherman made the famous "Sherman Statement" of refusal; "If nominated I will not accept, if elected, I will not serve."
Okay, but that was following a Union victory in the Civil War. Is it possible that following a Union defeat Sherman would have felt differently about politics, that he would have tried for the Presidency feeling it was up to him to redeem the Union cause? Maybe. But I don't think he would have won. Not given his ineptitude at politics and at handling the press (he hated reporters and editors even worse than he hated politicians) and not considering that, if the Civl War had ended at Gettysburg, Sherman would not have been all that prominent among Union generals. Up to that point, Sherman was a reliable subordinate of Grant in the Western theater, but he didn't become a great public hero until he took independent command in the West, fought the campaign that resulted in the taking of Atlanta, and then led the "March to the Sea".
And Sherman may have been no politician, but he was a good general. If he had somehow become President and started a new war against the South, I don't see him making the idiotic mistake he does in the early chapters of this book; concentrating Union forces around Washington, D.C. and in the far West, while leaving the long border between the Union and Confederacy undefended against a Confederate attack.
I've read alternate-history books where I thought the premise was implausible, but kept reading anyway because the characters and story kept me interested. This was not one of those. There was nothing special about the author's characters or storytelling to overcome my objections to the premise.

Two books

This is really two books. The first part does set up the second, but it’s so much more well done that it could very well have stood on its own.

So, what’s the first part cover? It’s pretty wide-ranging. There’s brain science, neuro-economics, evolutionary psychology and biology … And all of it explains, bit by bit, why people consume. The overall idea is that consumption is, not only status signaling, but also signaling that one is in a particular group.

That last part is particularly important, as it brings in the idea of the rebel impulse. The authors see this as an example of evolutionary divergence. In other words, evolution is not all about the survival of the fittest. Sometimes, organisms evolve, not to outcompete other organisms, but to find their own niche (e.g., Darwin’s many finches and their widely divergent beaks).

The second part? It pretty much abandons all that and takes a much more historical focus. It basically starts with the Beats as examples of the rebel impulse, moves through the ‘60s, and ends up with Millennials. In fact, the last section of the book is basically cheerleading for the Millenial generation.

If the book had stopped about two-thirds of the way through, I would definitely have given it 5 stars. As is, though, this weird combination of themes will have to garner a 4.

Never seems to get to the point

If you read this book (and I don't recommend it), do yourself a favor and skip to the last two chapters. That's where the authors finally discuss in any depth the notion of how that intangible quality of coolness drives economic choices. Even then, it's not particularly clear what their driving at. Suspicious of classical, rationalist economics, I enjoy the insights of behavioral economists. An Intriguing Examination of Our Propensity for Conspicuous Consumption

Earlier this summer, a young friend of mine, who was working at the Wall Street Journal, gave me a copy of "Cool." I was intrigued by the subtitle: "How The Brian's Hidden Quest for Cool Drives Our Economy and Shapes Our World." Authors Steven Quartz and Anette Asp draw from deep wells of research and analysis to make the case that our propensity for conspicuous consumption is not just a response to aggressive marketing and advertising, but has evolved over many centuries of human development. The authors draws from disciplines as varied as economics, psychology, anthropology, sociology and cognitive neuroscience.

I was skeptical about the premise of the book, but the research is so thoroughly annotated and analyzed that I was compelled to think differently about the impulses that drive us to spend our money in ways that do not always make rational sense. The implications of the findings of this book apply equally well to the realms of marketing, advertising, retailing and e-commerce.

If you would like to understand why you often find yourself compelled to purchase goods because they will make you feel and look "cool," then this book is for you. It is chock full of examples of how we as consumers have evolved to the point where we often purchase items for reasons that go far beyond their practical utility. This book is a welcome additional to the growing field of behavioral economics.

I am a big fan of The Big Nerd Ranch Guide and their 4th edition is the best iOS programming book I could find back then. This time, I bought this new version because now Swift is taking over.

The authors really know about iOS programming and how to teach it to you. All you need to do is follow their lead. When I was reading the book, I barely feel confused. Also, they did a great job to combine learning and doing. You need to build several apps to apply the knowledge you learned into real applications. Learning by this book is easy and fun.

Simply put, for anyone who's interested in iOS Programming, this is a great book to go with.

Perfect for anyone looking to get into iOS development

This book is exactly what I was looking for. I'm relatively new to swift but I also have a decent grasp of object oriented programming, so in my case, I wasn't looking for a top to bottom explanation of how programming works (If you ARE new to programming, then I'd go with the Swift Programming book by Big Nerd Ranch). What I needed was something that would present the important iOS concepts and briefly glaze over some of the nuances of swift. This book does just that.

The authors clearly know how to teach this subject because the material flows very naturally. They slowly introduce the reader to different aspects of iOS development, that you never feel confused or overwhelmed. In addition, everything is articulated and explained really well. I've tried a few other resources - following tutorials and listening to lectures online but nothing has felt nearly as effective as this. Partly because the book does a good job of maintaining a balance of teaching you new ideas while also having you apply them first hand. This method of learning is generally much more engaging since you're presented with concepts as you need them while building apps in different chapters of the book.

That said, I can't recommend this book enough. If you want to learn the ins and outs of developing your own app, this book is a must.

Step down from 4th edition

I am a big fan of the Big Nerd Ranch series, and I think they do an amazing job of explaining code and how to write an application. I am a seasoned iOS developer, and have read their Obj-C Programming, iOS Programming 4th edition, and Swift Programming - bravo to all of them. However, this book is lacking some serious topics:

1) There is no explanation of how to use Objective-C in Swift projects. This was explained in Swift Programming briefly for a chapter, but given that a good majority of existing libraries, Stack Overflow Q&A and previous projects are written in Obj-C, this was something that definitely needed more explanation, especially for a book that claims as a complete guide to iOS dev.
2) There is no explanation of Storyboard vs. Xib. This is a debatable topic among the iOS dev community, but many prefer Xib (including myself) over the Apple-sponsored Storyboards for reasons that were explained in the 4th edition of this book. However, there is no explanation of this in the book - let alone showing the alternative approach of using Xib, which is a method many professional developers prefer (once again, debatable).
3) No mention of Core Graphics, permission inquiries (push, location, etc), singletons, Cocoapods or Git. Core Graphics could be sufficient with one chapter (4th edition dragged this on for 3), permission inquiries like push and location are too commonly used to ignore it completely, singletons are basic comp sci methodology that was well explained and used in 4th edition, Cocoapods is an absolute must for any iOS developer these days, and git could be summarized in a section with default Xcode source control (no need for remote). While the last two are not strictly iOS development, definitely would be worth mentioning.

Really hope they come out with the new edition that is more complete as this version is written entirely in Swift, meaning any new iOS developers will not look at previous editions that are written in Obj-C. Understand that not everything can be explained in a book, but could definitely take out the over-emphasis on front-end dev.
