Digital Marketing & PR Fundamentals Updated For Today

[[VIDEOID:moZ4YNGKIEIIQO]]Over the past four years, I've found myself referencing The New Rules of Marketing & PR more often than I ever imagined. It's one of the few print books I keep in my office and on the shelf. I also often recommend the book to executives looking to get a clear and compelling understanding of the digital universe and how they can put it to work for their organization. Marketing and PR professionals will find the book refreshingly insightful. The book's focus on strategies and tactics that work keep it hype-free and simple - which I like.

The Fourth Edition has completely new and updated case studies, and a wonderfully compelling new section on Newsjacking (which I'm eager to embrace after reading the book.) There are interesting new insights into app development (including a chapter on Uber.) I particularly enjoyed David's Instagram section and the new (and compelling) ideas to leverage Google Plus and Google Hangouts for my business.

In short, there aren't many books I recommend you own a paperback copy of (as opposed to an electronic edition) but this is one of them. You'll find yourself referencing it for the next two years (or at least until David Meerman Scott releases the 5th edition.)

If you're reading this, you're probably considering buying the 4th edition of David Meerman Scott's The New Rules of Marketing & PR.

The are a couple of things you should bear in mind.

One is that, as a leading thought leader, David Meerman Scott "walks the walk." In contrast to a lot of "experts" who write about online marketing, the New Rules of Marketing & PR reflects original thinking, based on his career since 2002. David Meerman Scott practices what he preaches.

As he tells his story in the Introduction, (which you can read by clicking the Look Inside! book cover image, above), David understands media from an insider perspective. He knows media from multiple perspectives. He knew how the press operated, and he knows how it operates today. This is especially evident in Chapter 23, Newsjacking, one of the new chapters.

At one time, David controlled multi-million dollar corporate marketing budgets, but realized that, as Bob Dylan said, "the times they are a'changing."

What you get in the 4th edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR is based on what worked for him in the early years of the previous decade. David pioneered the (at the time) revolutionary view of giving drafts of chapters of the first edition of his book away for free, before his book was published to great success. Over the years, he's repeated and perfected the technique, to increasing success.

Second, there's the important element of refinement. Through the previous editions of The New Rules of Marketing & PR, David has been continuously refining and updating his ideas to reflect developing technology.

The 4th edition is as up-to-date as Obama's re-election, the mistakes that many corporations made last year following Hurricane Sandy, and what happened during the the SuperBowl "blackout" this year.

In addition, since the first edition, David has been communicating--through his blog and e-mail--with owners and managers of a broad range of businesses, agencies, associations, and nonprofits. He's listened to their stories and updated dozens of examples throughout the book.

The 4th edition reflects a major rewrite, with over 70 pages of new material, including two new chapters reflecting the latest technology. You'll learn about the latest online social media tools, and how you can use each to tell your story. You'll also discovers how others are doing it, as well as ideas and tips for using each tool.

Third, I continue to be impressed by how David Meerman Scott not only describes what he did, but he is a careful writer. He writes the way he speaks.

As someone who has interviewed him several times since the first edition, I'm impressed by the way David can says a lot in a conversational tone, carefully choosing his words, and lacing them with examples and how-to tips. Such writing doesn't come naturally. You have to work at it to get it right.

Thus, the 4th edition of The New Rules of Marketing & PR is a "safe" book to buy, even if you're familiar with the previous editions. Of course, if you're new to David Meerman Scott and his story, you have a lot of pleasant reading ahead of you!

You have to read this update NOW!

What's the difference between the 1st and 4th edition of David Meerman Scott's "The New Rules of Marketing and PR?"

In 2006, Scott predicted the emergence of a communication environment where "big" no longer conferred inherent advantage; where instead sincere and compelling content would resonate, no matter where it came from. He theorized why the weasel-word tone of corporate comms would no longer cut it. Before Twitter and Facebook were even on the radar, he envisioned an era where social media would lead to lightning-fast changes in reputation: obscurity to fame or fame to notoriety overnight. Not everyone believed him.

Now the world that Scott predicted is undeniably here, and the 4th edition powerfully outlines how to thrive in it. Steal it if you have to, but read this book -- especially if you're still spitting out weasel-speak like, "this call may be monitored for quality assurance purposes."

The mathematical theory of p- and hp-FEMs

The number of books on high order p- and hp-finite element methods is limited. This book goes one step further by providing a rigorous mathematical treatement of these methods applied to linear elliptic boundary value problems. It includes very recent advances in the field and it is an excellent resource for both researchers and educators. The only negative aspect of this first edition of the book is the (unusually high number of) typographical errors. Hopefully, this will be corrected in the second edition.

Differential equations first appeared in the late seventeenth century in the work of Isaac Newton, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, and the Bernoulli brothers, Jakob and Johann. They occurred as a natural consequence of the efforts of these great scientists to apply the new ideas of the calculus to certain problems in mechanics, such as the paths of motion of celestial bodies and the brachistochrone problem, which asks along which path from point P to point Q a frictionless object would descend in the least time. For over 300 years, differential equations have served as an essential tool for describing and analyzing problems in many scientific disciplines. Their importance has motivated generations of mathematicians and other scientists to develop methods of studying properties of their solutions, ranging from the early techniques of finding exact solutions in terms of elementary functions to modern methods of analytic and numerical approximation. Moreover, they have played a central role in the development of mathematics itself since questions about differential equations have spawned new areas of mathematics and advances in analysis, topology, algebra, and geometry have often offered new perspectives for differential equations.

This book provides an introduction to many of the important topics associated with ordinary differential equations. The material in the first six chapters is accessible to readers who are familiar with the basics of calculus, while some undergraduate analysis is needed for the more theoretical subjects covered in the final two chapters. The needed concepts from linear algebra are introduced with examples, as needed. Previous experience with differential equations is helpful but not required. Consequently, this book can be used either for a second course in ordinary differential equations or as an introductory course for well-prepared students.

The first chapter contains some basic concepts and solution methods that will be used throughout the book. Since the discussion is limited to first-order equations, the ideas can be presented in a geometrically simple setting. For example, dynamics for a first-order equation can be described in a one-dimensional space. Many essential topics make an appearance here: existence, uniqueness, intervals of existence, variation of parameters, equilibria, stability, phase space, and bifurcations. Since proofs of existence-uniqueness theorems tend to be quite technical, they are reserved for the last chapter.

Systems of linear equations are the major topic of the second chapter. An unusual feature is the use of the Putzer algorithm to provide a cc9nstructive method for solving linear systems with constant coefficients. The study of stability for linear systems serves as a foundation for nonlinear systems in the next chapter. The important case of linear systems with periodic coefficients (Floquet theory) is included in this chapter.

Chapter 3, on autonomous systems, is really the heart of the subject and the foundation for studying differential equations from a dynamical viewpoint. The discussion of phase plane diagrams for two-dimensional systems contains many useful geometric ideas. Stability of equilibria is investigated by both Liapunov's direct method and the method of linearization. The most important methods for studying limit cycles, the Poincare-Bendixson theorem and the Hopf bifurcation theorem, are included here. The chapter also contains a brief look at complicated behavior in three dimensions and at the use of Mathematics for graphing solutions of differential equations. We give proofs of many of the results to illustrate why these methods work, but the more intricate verifications have been omitted in order to keep the chapter to a reasonable length and level of difficulty.

Perturbation methods, which are among the most powerful techniques for finding approximations of solutions of differential equations, are introduced in Chapter 4. The discussion includes singular perturbation problems, an important topic that is usually not covered in undergraduate texts.

The next two chapters return to linear equations and present a rich mix of classical subjects, such as self-adjointness, disconjugacy, Green's functions, Riccati equations, and the calculus of variations.

Since many applications involve the values of a solution at different input values, boundary value problems are studied in Chapter 7. The contraction mapping theorem and continuity methods are used to examine issues of existence, uniqueness, and approximation of solutions of nonlinear boundary value problems.

The final chapter contains a thorough discussion of the theoretical ideas that provide a foundation for the subject of differential equations. Here we state and prove the classical theorems that answer the following questions about solutions of initial value problems: Under what conditions does a solution exist, is it unique, what type of domain does a solution have, and what changes occur in a solution if we vary the initial condition or the value of a parameter? This chapter is at a higher level than the first six chapters of the book.

There are many examples and exercises throughout the book. A significant number of these involve differential equations that arise in applications to physics, biology, chemistry, engineering, and other areas. To avoid lengthy digressions, we have derived these equations from basic principles only in the simplest cases.

Frank Thomas has always been one creator of Holmes/Watson pastiches that I have viewed as consistently solid products. The stories in this particular volume are strong, intriguing and all contain the sly humor and unexpected twists and terms I've come to enjoy. Frankly, my dear Frank...

I bought this book based on Frank Thomas' "Sherlock Holmes and the Golden Bird" Well, that book was a big four stars at the least. But these stories just don't measure up to the brilliance of that novel. Maybe it was the lack of using Watson's voice to tell the stories. I mean the stuff was there, but I failed to appreciate the presentation. Three stars, reluctantly. Quoth the Raven...

Reverse Osmosis is the dominant technology in water desalination. However, some critical issues remain open: improvement of water quality, enhancement of the recovery factor, reduction of the unit water cost, minimizing the brine disposal impact. This book aims to solve these problems with an innovative approach based on the integration of different membrane operations in pre-treatment and post-treatment stages. Membrane-Based Desalination: An Integrated Approach (acronym MEDINA) has been a three years project funded by the European Commission within the 6th Framework Program. The project team has developed a work programme aiming to improve the current design and operation practices of membrane systems used for water desalination, trying to solve or, at least, to decrease the critical issues of sea and brackish water desalination systems. In the book, the main results achieved in the nine Work Packages constituting the project will be described, and dismissed by the leaders of the various WPs. The following areas are explored in the book: * the development of advanced analytical methods for feed water characterization, appropriate fouling indicators and prediction tools, procedures and protocols at full-scale desalination facilities; * the identification of optimal seawater pre-treatment strategies by designing advanced hybrid membrane processes (submerged hollow fibre filtration/reaction, adsorption/ion exchange/ozonation) and comparison with conventional methods; * the optimisation of RO membrane module configuration, cleaning strategies, reduction of scaling potential by NF; * the development of strategies aiming to approach the concept of Zero Liquid Discharge (increasing the water recovery factor up to 95% by using Membrane Distillation - MD; bringing concentrates to solids by Membrane Crystallization or Wind Intensified Enhanced Evaporation) and to reduce the brine disposal environmental impact and cost; * increase the sustainability of desalination process by reducing energy consumption(evaluation of MD, demonstration of a new energy recovery device for SWRO installations)and u se of renewable energy (wind and solar).
