Colour in Glazes starts out with very technical explanations about glaze chemistry, but not to worry, it gets easier to understand as you continue to read. After you mine the recipes, go back to chapter one to better understand the differences between the glazes. You can get a lot more out of it if you learn what makes the color work in each recipe and how to adjust recipes as needed. The book offers suggestions on adjusting glazes to fire at different temperatures and if you re not used to mixing your own glazes, chapter six tells you how. Chapter seven teaches you how to apply glazes while chapter eight guides you through testing your new glazes. If you already have a slew of glaze books, this one is shorter and more concise than some of those old books, and it includes information and recipes about rare earth oxides comparing the colors they produce to the colors you are familiar with in standard colorants. --Sumi von Dassow Pottery Making Illustrated Nov/Dec 2011

A Must Have for Your Library of Ceramics Books

If you're like me, you were concerned about buying a relatively short book in paperback for thirty dollars. I hate paperback books, and that is one of the only drawbacks to this title. Otherwise, this is one of the few books on glazing from this century that is worth buying. It is a recipe book in part, but I probably wouldn't buy this book on that basis alone. The unique thing about this book is that it explains some of the complex scientific principles of glaze chemistry in terms that most people can understand. In fact, I would go so far as to say that if you don't understand now or don't understand after looking some stuff up, you probably shouldn't bother with formulating your own glazes. But, if you enjoy mixing and testing glazes, this book is a must have. Dr. Bloomfield has clearly explained the role that each of the common glaze components plays in a formula, with recipes and photos that illustrate those effects. It even goes into some of the off the wall ingredients that most people never use, such as rare earth colorants.

I didn't buy this for the recipes, rather to better understand the role of each ingredient in glazes. I should also mention that I am not a chemist and I understand the principles set forth in this book. So, if you are like me, this is the book you have been waiting for. Well, still waiting for a hardback version.

This book rides an awkward boundary between science and practical studio use. In doing so, it fails to do either well. The chemistry behind the colors are sort of half-explained with useful tidbits here and there. And there are also recipes. But the theory explanations don't go deep enough to allow the user to readily understand and alter the recipes. At least it's considerably better than "The Handbook of Glaze Recipes" I just purchased by the same author...

This book is not for beginners in glaze mixing! It has many great tips and helpful information, but it is geared more to serious potters and those already well acquainted with glaze chemistry. It has great information about how different chemicals react together that would be very beneficial to those who are wanting to create a new or unique glaze.

Lee Karr is a devoted fan of the films of George A. Romero, in particular Day of the Dead, and has formed close friendships with many of the film’s cast and crew. Over the years he has contributed photos and liner notes for DVD and Blu-ray releases in both the U.S. and Japan for Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. He has written for magazines including Horrorhound and Famous Monsters of Filmland, and previously interviewed George A. Romero for homepageofthedead.com. He lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is his first book.

Greg Nicotero is executive producer of AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead. An acclaimed actor, director and special-effects creator, his wildly inventive work has earned him legendary status within the horror genre. Since landing his break as assistant to Tom Savini on Day of the Dead, he's gone on to enjoy a long and illustrious career. He is the co-founder of Hollywood's prestigious KNB EFX Group and the winner of four Emmy Awards. He lives in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and two children.

every dead has its' day: great book!

the making of george romero's day of the dead by lee karr is wonderful. like many such books, this one is a labor of love, and the author even shares a picture of the birthday cake his mother made him for his fifteenth birthday with dr. tongue drawn in icing. exhaustively and lovingly researched, karr has been given access to the archives of greg nicotero, tom savini, and others. He puts together the evolution of day from george romero's epic first vision, to the small, more personal, darker and more beautiful, final product (i'm super glad we got this one).

as with any good making-of book, it's great fun to read about the goodwill of the cast and crew, its' inventiveness and tirelessness, and the hardships of working down in that mine. but there's also plenty of tales of conflict and disagreement, largely surrounding producer david small (who comes across as a little arrogant and self-important, and who clearly has no love--or respect--for romero), and director of photography michael gornick, who was in the midst of ending his working relationship with george romero, and not in overly amiable fashion. also, tom savini and his exploits are well-recorded, entertaining and telling.

filled with wonderful interviews--all the cast and crew, pretty much--incredible photographs (see a gaylen ross visiting the set), annotated filming schedule, and just endless amounts of day of the dead esoterica, lee karr's making of day of the dead is a fabulous, informative, entertaining examination of romero's wonderful, occasionally overlooked classic.

Worth reading if you are a fan

If you, like I, are a fan of this particular entry in the Romero zombie trilogy, then really, you have to add this book to your library. Most of the major "how they did it" points will be well-familiar already to most fans, but there are some new things to learn. The author takes you through a virtual day by day account of the filming (A "Diary of the Dead," if you will -- sorry, had to do it). Certain members of the cast and crew don't come off particularly well, and you'll finish the book somewhat surprised that this movie actually got made.

An enjoyable, if not in places particularly well-written account of, IMHO, the second-best movie of the trilogy (after NOTLD, of course). Again, if you are a fan of this movie, get this book.

A great book that exhaustively covers the filming of Day of the Dead. Full of interviews and behind the scenes info, and is quite possibly the best book I have read devoted to a single film. I wish Dawn of the Dead would get a similar treatment. This was truly outstanding and you can tell that Lee Karr really was working on this as a labor of love.

When I was reading “The Forsyte Saga” by John Galsworthy, I stumbled on this book. It was mentioned in the book where one of the main characters of Forsyte Saga (young Jolyon) was reading this book in French. I had read “Thais” before and, since his other books are “The crime of Sylvestre Bonnard” and “The Gods will have Blood”, I thought the author France specialized in religious and moral fables. I did not want to read religious novels but the title really arosed my curiosity. The book started as if the author was going to tell of religion because a monk appeared. But then as the story goes on, what a corrupt monk he is! He lies, steals, drinks, gambles and womanizes but still, his pupil and story teller of this book respects and worships him. This boy, a son of rotisserie, a working class but educated by this monk is so brain washed. Did the author want to tell how na�ve working class is even with education? Was France a genuine cynic? If he was I can digest this book. If not, how can I understand this book? I noticed in “Forsyte Saga”, Young Jolyon’s dog was “Balthasal”, another France’s work.

Ideal for Intermediate Language Learners

I teach at a language school in Fort Lauderdale. Dozxens of students each month ask me, "How can I improve my English?" I tell them, "Get a dictionary with synonyms and opposites." The Webster S and A is the best I've found -- and portable, too.
It is vital for language learners to have something interesting to pull them forward. We tend to learn by what we are interested in and in what the opposite is. "That movie was ________" (interesting, great, fantastic...not boring, not slow, not hard to understand.) We tend to think in similars and opposites, so why not use a book that is designed to give you shades of meaning as well as the opposites? I highly recommend this book and I encourage students to pick it up. What is very good in this book? There is an example sentence to show the meaning, such as:
weak, feeble frail weak is broad, like a weak muscle, a week excuse, foundation. feeble usually shows ineffectiveness or smoethign we should pity: a feeble old man, feeble joke. frail suggests an inherited weakness, that something is weak in the structure: her frail body, a frail conscience.
You see what a valuable tool this is? I urge you to recommend this book to your learners of English, even if they are native speakers.

"Master the Subtleties of Language"

"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of Synonyms and Antonyms" is the hands down best reference book I've ever bought.

It groups synonyms together and then explains the subtle differences between them (e.g., "infer, deduce, conclude, judge, gather" are followed by definitions of each word explaining the subtle differences in their meanings -- and example of their usage in a sentence) If ever you spent five bucks on a writing reference book, this is the book to have.

My only critique is that very few nouns are ever given (most synonyms given in this book are either verbs or adjectives). And it would be helpful to see all the subtle differences between nouns like "automobile, car, sedan." I hope this helps.

This book is very nice,but may be not the best for your particular desire. If you want more detailed information and usage examples, I recommend the M-W's Dictionary of Synonyms, if you would like a convenient guide of using words, I would say M-W's Pocket Guide of Synonyms is better for you!
