If I hear "how much wood" one more time I am gonna ...

This book certainly has variety.
One song featured a whole tone scale that I thought was pretty cool.

My daughter's favorite song was about a woodchuck.
She would sing in a raucous voice while she played.
Her teacher (as the book suggests) had her play it in minor as well.
She made up new words for that version about how the woodchuck died.

Another standout is Aardvark Boogie with the big left hand position change.
The other songs, some of which are not about small mammals, are good, too.

Piano Adventures Lesson Book is solid!

I have been teaching piano at the beginner and intermediate levels for ten years. I find the Faber & Faber Piano Adventures Lesson Book to be thorough with regard to well-rounded piano instruction. Their newer version duplicates some of the supplemental materials that I provide (i.e., pentachords, scales, I-IV-V chords), which my students learn far in advance of the book's timeline. By the time most of my students complete level 2A, they have memorized all the major pentachords and scales and are working on the minor keys. Still, for under $8 per lesson book, this series is affordable and packed with songs that my students enjoy learning. I appreciate the massive efforts of Faber & Faber to make piano study fun and steadily progressive.

Powerful and Effective!

This book is incredibly inspiring! I used the testimonies from the last chapter for a program for a single moms group. I have used the blessings themselves with elementary aged children in Children's Church and in a Wednesday night program. The room got VERY quiet as the children listened intently to the blessing. When children I had been doing this with weekly came late one week, they were quite upset to realize they had missed the blessing. This is a powerful and valuable resource for parents and teachers! I have given this book as a gift to several adult friends. They, too, have been deeply touched and inspired by the blessings and the testimonies. One friend felt it was such an encouragement to her as she was not raised by nurturing parents. She felt everyone could benefit from this book. She was using it as a means of blessing for herself.

Reasonable book on SOPs but no break through info

The book is easy to read and provides nice info on many of the common roadblocks to effective SOPs. I was expecting more on lessons learned about the use of graphics and symbols that would dramatically improve SOPs. This book will help folks that are being thrown into the fire of fixing poor quality SOPs that haven't been burned by them before.

A Moving and Brilliant Play

The play's main narrative line tells the story of the Salem witch hunts which took place in Massachusetts, 1692. At a deeper level, Miller raises several powerful and important questions about human life and morality. But the play's most amazing quality is that it is not "deep" or "philosophical" by traditional standards. Miller has, in a short and easy-to-read manuscript, opened the door (or maybe I should say he presents the reader with a mirror) to modern political life.
The play is essentially a crtique of McCarthyism and the the communist scare of the 1950s. Miller saw the parallels between the witch hunts and the McCarthy trials, and found the witch trials to be a compelling vehicle for discussing modern events. Key themes include:
1. People gaining absolution from the powers-that-be by confessing the sins of others.
2. The power of community rituals, such as confession.
3. The role of political opposition and the consequences of compliance (passive or active).
4. The consequences of a polarized world views and mass hysteria.
These are just a few of the themes. The play is quite clearly a great tragedy, but remains a tragedy for our times. Through characters we can connect with, Miller convincingly shows us that the lessons from the witch hunts still apply. As a reader, I am convinced that Miller's play remains relevant and powerful in the twenty-first century. Miller has left me with questions, regarding world events in 2002 and 2003, that I did not have before reading the play.
I read this play in only a couple hours. It is compelling, engaging, and difficult to put down. Personally, I feel this text stands a great chance of making it onto my "top ten" list of best manuscripts. I highly recommend this play.

Frightening Possibilities

As usual, Arthur Miller was in rare form when he wrote "The Crucilble." Although on the surface it is about the Salem Witch Trials, Miller's true inspiration came from the Red Scare that plagued Hollywood in the middle of the twentieth century (and included his pal Elia Kazan). The fact that Miller wove factual history with the hysteria of his day makes "The Crucible" all the more chilling.

Throughout the course of the play, a collection of teenage girls 'confess' to having seen various women and men of the town of Salem with the devil. This hysteria sweeps over the town as even the authorities fall under the sway of these lying young girls. Caught in the middle of these hysteronics is the Proctor family - John and Elizabeth, who have struggled in the past, but are trying to rebuild their marriage. They are rent apart when Elizabeth is suspected of being a witch. John hopes to clear his wife's name, but only manages to make matters worse for both of them.

The hysteria experienced in Salem is chilling in the fact that these sorts of witch hunts occur today, in all different areas of society. "The Crucible" shows how easily people can be swayed, with the barest of evidence, to believe something that is false. Miller's play is extremely well-written and informative, and almost too frighteningly real.

a great recording

I used this recording this year while teaching "The Crucible". My students loved it!! The emotion conveyed by the cast is SO much better than the typical monotone voice that students use while reading out loud. Even though there were some small parts that are skipped when following along with our textbook, it was completely worth it (and the parts skipped were very small - it was very easy to read it aloud if necessary).

Execellent resource for sustainable design

This is an excellent book on Daylighting especially in the way the author discusses so many related and synergystic issues. It is an extremely informative, elegant, scholarly and comprehensive book on the subject. Beautifully illustrated with superbly photographed plates. As a daylighting practitioner and architect in the field, I find it to be both useful and interesting. My congratulations to May Guzowski who, incidentally, teaches architecture at the University of Minnesota.

About the Author
Susan J. Armstrong is Professor of Philosophy at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California. She has taught environmental ethics with Prof. Richard G. Botzler since l983. Her dissertation "The Rights of Nonhuman Beings: A Whiteheadian Study" (1976) is considered to be the first dissertation written on environmental ethics. (Available online at www.humboldt.edu/~phil/susan.html). Susan is a member of the Editorial Board of Environmental Ethics. She has written a number of articles and book chapters on process philosophy and recently co-edited The Animal Ethics Reader (Routledge 2003) with Richard G. Botzler. She was nominated for Outstanding Professor in l989 and 2002.

Richard Botzler is a Professor of Wildlife at Humboldt State University. He has served as a Fulbright Fellow to the Federal Republic of Germany and as editor for the Journal of Wildlife Diseases. Rick has authored over 40 journal articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and book reviews in wildlife health and diseases, science ethics, and environmental ethics. He was selected as Humboldt State University's outstanding professor for 1991 and as 1992 outstanding professor for the 20-campus California State University. He also received the Distinguished Service Award from the Wildlife Disease Association. Rick enjoys hiking the backcountry of Humboldt County and cycling.

Great Book with Great Essays

Wonderful book by wonderful professors of the subject matter. I went into the class an 'unknowing' student of the importance of stewardship and came out seeing the importance and a changed person. My politics have changed. Professors are two of the best at HSU, which in itself, is one of the best universities to study anything to do with the natural sciences.

In Volume I, Tomasito reveals the time�-tested conga method which he himself studied with "Changuito" and other master congueros at the ENA conservatory in Havana. Volume I starts at the absolute beginning and is designed for the person who has never touched the congas, but is also of great value to the advanced player who wishes to understand the foundation and rudiments of the approach that has allowed the ENA and the other Havana conservatories to consistently turn out so many world class congueros each year.

Volume I begins with simple exercises to develop technique and systematically works its way through rudiments and “recursos” for use in solos and fills and basic rhythm patterns such as Salsa, Cha-Cha and Bolero. These are presented using the unique Step by Step DVD Method, which enables the student to learn the patterns by watching the DVD and imitating Tomasito as he builds the patterns stroke by stroke. This, combined with a special type of notation designed to be simple for those who don't read music, results in a conga course that really works, rather than just another reference book to add to the bookshelf!

About the Author
Tomas "Tomasito" Cruz was born and raised in Cuba in the middle of the musical revolution of the 90's. By the time he relocated to Miami he had become one of the top congueros in Cuba, playing in what most Cuban music experts consider one of the two or three best Timba bands ever assembled, the 1997-98 incarnation of Paulito FG y su Elite which recorded the groundbreaking CD, "Con la conciencia tranquila". The creativity and drive Tomasito's conga tumbaos on that album put him in the very upper echelon of the most competive Latin music scene in the world. Similarly, it took Tomasito very little time to rise to the top of the Miami Latin music scene, playing with Manolin, el Medico de la Salsa, Willie Chirino, Celia Cruz, and many others. He also has a thorough mastery of bongo, Bata, and a deep understanding of Cuban music as a whole. In short, when we set out to write a book explaining the mysteries of Cuban conga playing, Tomasito was our first choice by a considerable margin.

Great Investment to any age Conga Player !! Highly Recommended--A+ 5 STARS***** All the way!!!!

This is a Great Book and DVD. I have learned so much in just few days that I am 100% comfortable recommending this book to any one from youngsters to the not so young any more; but young at heart. I am 50 and never play congas before; just learned some basics with what I like to call an online friend/teacher Mr. M,M. Via Youtube . but I knew I needed some structured Regimen if I really wanted to develop myself as a New Congero and Mr. Tomas Cruz in Colaboration with Kevin Moore, Mike Gerald, Orlando Fiol and of Course MELBAY CO. facilitated that with this great book. I have also purchased Volume 2 . Which I have it on Stand by so when I feel ready and have Completely " assimilated" the book and DVD to the point of Mastering it, then I will move to Volume 2 and of course number 3 will follow right after that. Today , I got my Brand New LP Conga Tumbao and it came at the perfect time to practice 1 and 2 congas Tumbao Marcha and Chachacha as well.

Good but slow, get Volume II also

This book/DVD is very slow moving but it is also very clear. There are only a few actual rhythms in this first volume. The good part is this approaches conga technique very clearly and if you do the exercises you will improve greatly. It is very important to get the proper technique FIRST because relearning rhythms after you have bad technique is counterproductive and slower in the end. You can also hurt your hands as I did at first. However, as another reviewer mentions this IS rather boring and slow. I think the best solution is to integrate this volume with volume II slowly. That is, start with this and go through it a few times. Maybe don't even order Volume II for a couple weeks. Then return to these exercises OVER and OVER and OVER as warm ups while slowly learning the marchas and rhythms from volume II. That will be less boring but if you simply ignore all the lessons in volume I it seems like you will suffer from some deficiencies. All in all a great series, but if you just get Volume I you won't have very much to play.

The best conga teaching method ever

As a conga newbie, I really appreciate the way this book and DVD were laid out. Yes, it's slow, but thanks to that I have been able to learn and learn well. So, don't pay attention to Naoise O'hannain's review.

Before Tomasito's method, I tried countless of other books and vidoes and none of them taught me a thing...

Once again, if you're a beginner on congas and you're a smart person, buy this book and DVD package and you won't be disappointed. Otherwise, if you're like Naoise O'hannain, go buy something else and you'll regret it.
