Review
“Mark Vagle’s book is sure to be the go-to source for those who want to do phenomenological research in the social sciences. He not only explains the genealogy of phenomenological theories but also provides hands-on, practical examples of how they permeate a life, how they take hold in one’s bones, how they create a new way of being with the world. Vagle’s approach is joyous but also careful, critical, and contemporary as he extends phenomenology, opening it up to new imaginings demanded by 21st century inquiry.”―Elizabeth A. St. Pierre, University of Georgia

“The gift that phenomenology offers us is vitality, a way of knowing our world that acknowledges the emotions, histories, and interests that animate our lives. Mark Vagle brings that lifefullness right into his text. His scholarship serves his interest in sharing the possibilities of this work with us, and so he builds a bridge between its foundations, their interpretations, and our understanding, and he interprets their use and application in educational research with imagination. Reconciling description and interpretation in his approach, Vagle’s phenomenology is animated and accessible without being simplified. It is a wonderful achievement and a significant contribution to the practice of phenomenological research in education.”―Madeleine R. Grumet, Professor of Education and Communication Studies, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

“Having edited a major qualitative journal for over 15 years, I know many qualitative researchers claim to be using phenomenology. Unfortunately, most are not and don’t even really understand it. Mark Vagle does, and in this volume he sets out―in a warm, personable manner―to help others to understand it through careful explanations and numerous examples. Stop claiming what you don’t know and read this book. If you do, you could actually learn to be a phenomenologist.”―James Joseph “Jim” Scheurich, Editor, International Journal of Qualitative Studies in Education

About the Author

He has written extensively on phenomenological research in education journals and regularly teaches university courses and professional workshops on the subject. Very accessible with excellent examples and resources!
By Jolie
This text is very accessible and provides many excellent examples and resources. Vagle starts with basic understandings of phenomena and intentionality using insight from Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, Gadamer, Deleuze, and Sokolowski. He describes how phenomenology has grown from Husserl to Heidegger to contemporary variants such as Smith, Flowers, & Larkin's interpretive phenomenological analysis. He explains the different approaches from Giorgi, van Manen, and Dahlberg. This allows the reader to understand the philosophical commitments that underpin various phenomenological research approaches. This text is particularly valuable for scholars who want to put phenomenology in dialogue with post-structural theories (e.g., Grumet and Ahmed). Vagle's post-intentional phenomenology is useful for researchers who are exploring a phenomenon in multiple and varied contexts. This text provides a clear entry point into phenomenology and the philosophy. It is an excellent book!

Great read!
By sheila Moriarty
I have read quite a few phenomenological texts, but found this one to be accessible in a way that helped me make important connections with concepts. In addition to talking about his own approach, post-intentional phenomenology, he takes time to honor the original work of Husserl and Heidegger as well as the more recent work done by Dahlberg and van Manen. I highly recommend this book.

The boat's engine throbbed as Grayson Bennett kept the Hacker at a low speed and close to the lakeshore. The antique, thirty-foot craft was his pride and joy, a relic of the Great Gatsby era of lake life. Made of mahogany and varnished to a shine so bright it could hurt your eyes, the Bellitas was indeed a thing of beauty. And she was wickedly fast. The long, thin design provided three discreet seating areas, marked by contoured banquettes in dark green leather. The massive engine, capable of shooting the boat through the water at speeds of sixty miles an hour, took up a good six feet of space in the middle.

He would miss her when he put her up on blocks for the winter, and the time for her yearly hibernation was coming fast. He could feel it in the air.

Even though it was the middle of the day, September was cool in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. To take the edge off the chill, he was wearing a windbreaker and his only passenger, aside from a big, very happy golden retriever, had on a thick sweater.

Naturally, the dog had plenty of insulation.

Gray looked across the seat at the woman who stared at the cliffs they were passing. Cassandra Cutler's thick red hair was secured at her neck and her green eyes were hidden behind sunglasses. The frames covered up the dark circles of her exhaustion, too.

No doubt she saw little of the rocks and pine trees, he thought. Life had to be an inconsequential blur for someone who'd become a widow only six weeks ago.

"How're we doing?" he asked his old, dear friend. She smiled slightly, a tense expression he knew she worked at. "I'm glad you pestered me to get out of the city."

"Good."

"I can't imagine I'm enjoyable company, though," Cassandra said.

"You're not here to perform."

Gray focused on the lake ahead as the silence was filled with the sound of the boat's deep-throated engine and the lapping of water against the wooden gunnels. Sunshine glinted off the mahogany, flashed over the tops of the gentle waves, brought out the vivid blue of the sky and the dense green of the mountains. The air was so clear and clean that when he breathed deep, the inside of his nose hummed.

It was a perfect fall day. And he was about to shoot the hell out of his quiet enjoyment.

When they'd left his estate's boathouse, he could have taken them in any direction. To the south, where they could have danced around a thicket of small islands. Across to the west to see some of the other big stretches of property.

But no, he'd chosen the north where sooner or later the old Moorehouse mansion would appear. White Caps was a big white birthday cake of a house, perched on a three-acre bluff. Once the family's lavish private home, it had been turned into a bed-and-breakfast by them when their money had run out.

But he wasn't going to look at the property.

When the bluff appeared in the distance, his eyes narrowed. The long rolling lawn, which drifted from White Caps' porches to the shore, was a dazzling green. Oaks and maples framed the house, already turning colors from the frosts that came at night.

He couldn't see anyone and he looked harder, even as he started to turn the boat around.

Cassandra didn't need to get anywhere near the Moorehouse place. Her husband's sailing partner, who'd survived the yachting accident, was recovering there with his family. Gray wasn't sure she knew that or whether she'd want to see Alex, but he wasn't inclined to take a chance at giving her another shock. She'd had enough bad surprises lately.

Cassandra's voice did not break his concentration. "My husband liked you, Gray."

"I liked Reese," he said, looking over his shoulder at the house, eyes searching.

"But he thought you were a dangerous man."

"did he?"

"He said you knew where most of the bodies were buried in Washington, D.C. Because you'd put a lot of them in the ground."

He made a noise in the back of his throat and continued to stare as White Caps grew smaller.

"I've heard it from other people."

"Really."

"They say even the President is wary of you." He glanced back at the house again. "Loose talk. Just loose talk."

"Considering the way you're looking at that mansion back there, I'm not so sure." Cassandra tilted her head to the side, regarding him with steady curiosity. "Who lives there? Or more to the point, what do you want that's in that house?"

When Gray remained silent, Cassandra's dry chuckle floated over on the breeze. "Well, whatever it is, I feel sorry for the poor thing. Because you look like you're on the hunt."

"Hold still or I'm going to stick you," Joy Moorehouse said to her sister.

"I am holding still."

"Then why is this hem a moving target?" She shifted back onto her heels and looked up at her work.

The wedding gown hung from her sister Frankie's shoulders in a graceful fall of white satin. Joy had been careful with the design. Too many frills and excess fabric wouldn't pass muster. Frankie thought blue jeans were formal as long as you wore them with your hair up.

"Do I look like I'm in someone else's dress?" Frankie asked.

"You look beautiful."

Frankie laughed without bitterness. "That's your department, not mine. I'm the plain, practical sister, remember?"

"Ah, but you're the one getting married."

"And ain't it a miracle?"

Joy smiled. "I'm so happy for you."

Everyone was. The whole town of Saranac Lake was thrilled and they were all coming to festivities that were taking place in about six weeks.

Frankie lifted the skirting up gingerly, as if she might hurt it. "I have to admit, this thing feels good."

"It'll fit even better when I finish the alterations. You can take it off now."

"We're done?"

Joy nodded and got up from the floor. "I've basted all around the bottom. I'll stitch it up this evening and we'll do another fitting tomorrow."

"But I thought you were going to help out tonight. We're catering Mr. Bennett's birthday party, remember?"

Joy almost laughed. She'd have better luck losing track of her own head than forgetting where she was supposed to be in another couple of hours. And who she would see.

"Remember?" Frankie prompted. "We're going to need you."

Joy made busywork putting her sewing kit back together. She had a feeling her excitement was showing on her face and she didn't want her sister to see it. "I know."

"The party could go late."

"It doesn't matter." Because it wasn't as if she'd be able to sleep when they got back home.

"I don't want you slaving over this dress."

"And you're getting married in a month and a half, so I have to get the thing done. Well, unless you fancy yourself heading down the aisle in your underwear, a sight I'm pretty sure Nate would prefer to keep for his eyes only. Besides, you know I love doing this, especially for you." She turned around. Her sister was staring out the window, absently stroking the gown. "Frankie? What's wrong?"

"Last night, I asked Alex to walk me to the altar."

"What did he say?" Joy whispered, even though she knew getting their brother to the ceremony at all was going to be tough.

"He won't do it. I don't think he wants the attention to be on him." Frankie shook her head. "I can't force him to be by my side. But I really wish…hell, I wish Dad were going to be with me. Mom, as well. I wish they were both still here."

Joy took her sister's hand. "Me, too."

Frankie looked down at herself, her brown hair falling forward. She gave a short, awkward laugh that Joy knew meant she was changing the subject. "I can't believe this."

"What?"

"I don't want to take this thing off. It's so gorgeous."

Joy smiled sadly, thinking that with each stitch she put into the gown, she was trying to make up for everything her sister had done for her. God, all those sacrifices Frankie had made to become a parent too soon. The work on the dress seemed like a pitiful exchange.

"Here, let me undo the buttons in the back for you."

When Frankie stepped out of the pool of satin, Joy swept the dress into her arms and carried it over to her worktable. Her bedroom was small, so between her sewing machine, her mannequin and the bolts of fabric against the wall, space was at a premium. Thank God she only had a twin bed.

Over the years she'd patched and repaired countless ball gowns for their grandmother at her little makeshift sewing station. Emma Moorehouse, better known as Grand-Em, suffered from dementia so she was prone to irrational obsessions. And given that she'd once been a wealthy young lady of fine breeding and reputation, she felt uncomfortable if she didn't look her best for the parties she was certain were just about to start every moment of the day.

Except there were no parties. There hadn't been for decades.

With the declining fortunes of the Moorehouse family, there was no money to replace either the lifestyle or the luxury their grandmother had once known. But Joy was able to keep the Golden Era illusion alive by maintaining the forty- and fifty-year-old ball gowns. In doing so, she helped Grand-Em to find a measure of calm.

And discovered a passion for clothing design in herself.

"We've got three rooms filled this weekend," Frankie said as she pulled on khakis. "Which means the leaf peepers are showing up on schedule."

The White Caps mansion had been built by their ancestors at the turn of the nineteenth century and back then, it had been one of many Moorehouse real estate holdings. Now the ten-bedroom house was all that was left of a once mighty fortune.

In the eighties, their mother and father had turned the place into a bed-and-breakfast. Following their deaths a decade ago, Frankie had struggled to keep the business going, and it appeared that they'd finally turned a corner. The B&B was on the upswing, thanks in large part to Frankie's fiance, Nate Walker. Nate's fine French cooking had made White Caps a destination and his timely investment in the business had pulled them out of a debt spiral.

"So, about tonight." Frankie shoved her feet into a pair of beat-up sneakers. "Spike's going to mind the store here with George on backup. Nate, Tom and I are going to head over to the Bennett kitchen in another hour or so. Can you get there about five?"

"No problem."

"Thank God, Alex is willing to watch Grand-Em. Have you told him what to expect?"

Joy nodded. "I think he'll be okay and Spike's here if she gets really agitated. Fortunately she's been quieter now during evenings."

Stewarding Grand-Em through her delusions was usually Joy's job, but they needed all the hands they could get for the party.

"I'm so glad Gray gave us this chance," Frankie said, drawing her hair back. "He's a good man. For a politician."

He's not a politician, Joy wanted to say. He's a political consultant who specializes in elections.

But the correction might get her sister's attention and Joy was careful about keeping her obsession with Gray to herself. Sharing pipe dreams was almost as futile as having them in the first place.

"You're awful quiet, Joy. Are you sure you want to come tonight?"

"I'm just distracted." By the fact that she was going to get to watch Gray for three, maybe four, hours. And that maybe she'd get a chance to talk with him.

Although the exposure probably wasn't a good thing. After so many years of pining for the man, lately she'd been trying to let the unrequited fascination go. She was going to be twenty-seven soon, for heaven's sake. Living in the fantasy was getting old. And so was she.

"You don't have to come, Joy. I could have one of the waitresses sub."

"I want to," she said firmly. Sort of.

Because he was going to look so good tonight. Gray-son Bennett always looked good. "You work too hard," Frankie said. "So do you."

Frankie shook her head and then stared long and hard across the room. She'd worn glasses until recently, and without the lenses, her eyes seemed bluer than ever.

"You know," she said casually, "I was talking to Tom yesterday. He was asking a lot of questions about you. He's a really nice guy."

Tom Reynolds was the new line cook who'd been hired to help Nate and his partner, Spike, in the kitchen. And he was a nice guy. With a nice guy's sweet smile. And a nice guy's gentle eyes. And a nice guy's polite manner.

Except Joy liked what Gray had. The power. The charisma. The promise of breathtaking, hot sex.

Which probably would have shocked her sister.

If Frankie was the practical one, Joy was supposed to be the prim, protected youngest. Except she was getting bored with being good, especially whenever Gray Bennett came to mind.

Which, in spite of her resolve, was about as often as the grandfather clock downstairs spoke up.

Basically, every fifteen minutes.

"Maybe you and Tom should go out sometime," Frankie said.

Joy shrugged. "Maybe."

As her sister left the room, Joy sat on the bed. She knew her fixation on Gray was unhealthy. Getting tangled up in fantasies about some man she saw maybe five or six times a year was ridiculous. And it wasn't as if he encouraged her. Whenever Gray came up to the lake in the summer and she ran into him in town, he was always friendly. He even remembered her name. But that was as far as it ever got.

Well, except in her dreams. Then it went a whole lot further.

In real life, however, the attraction was totally onesided. She was pretty certain about how Gray perceived her and it was just what she thought of Tom, the line cook. Nice. Sweet. Young.

Completely unremarkable.

And the truly pathetic thing was, even though she knew all that, even though she wanted to forget about Grayson Bennett, she still couldn't wait to see him tonight.

Eh. Great Writing, Poor Ending...
By BookEater99
I don't want to rehash the plot, so I will get straight to my thoughts.

Right out of the starting gate, I liked these characters. Each one has that strong, unique voice I have come to expect in Ward's characters. Gray was powerful, fierce, and commanding, and yet he had that soft under layer that lets you know that he isn't a bad person, but maybe just following down the wrong path. Joy is the type of woman who is caring and thoughtful and gives a lot of herself, probably too much, even at the expense of her own happiness. She has been in love with Gray for years but doesn't really consider herself in his league, not to mention that everyone and their mother seems to be warning her to stay away for her own good.

The story itself was well-written. It had tragedy and sorrow and enough misunderstandings to try a saint's patience. As much as I liked the overall storyline, I was annoyed with Joy and her absolute need to respond to Gray when it seemed to me that, although he had his redeeming qualities, she didn't know that and should have dropped him on his ass, hard...several times. I think what really bothered me about the story, however, isn't all the wishy washy stuff, but the ending.

I have grown somewhat accustomed to the type of endings Ward gives in her BDB and Fallen Angels series that leave me wanting so much more and ready to throw myself over a cliff to get it, that this one left me saying "Huh? Really?" Originality clearly wasn't the name of the game here. Instead, the ending was completely cliched. I can't count how many times this scenario has played out in movies and TV shows where...

*SPOILER ALERT*

...the hero defies death, leaping onto the back of a fast moving train to get to his lady love and plead for her forgiveness, followed up by the spilling of his guts then the down on one knee proposal of which, if she doesn't accept, the lady behind her happily will.

Needless to say, this one fell flat for me. Instead of finishing strong, it took the easy way out. I still love Ward, but I don't know if I will venture into her traditional romance novels again.

Oh, who am I kidding, of course I will! It's J.R. Ward for crying out loud!

another feel good romance
By Under The Covers Book Blog
4.5 Feathers
Reviewed by Francesca & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It's another feel good romance from the Warden herself! I liked it better than the first, even though I saw a lot of people felt the other way around. I think I started liking Joy Moorehouse from the first book. She's the timid, younger girl that has had a crush on the towns' most eligible bachelor her whole life. She's had dreams of giving him her virginity and living happily ever after.

You can't help but like her! But at the same time she's no wilting flower. She has a backbone, she goes after her goals in life and in love. And when she loves she gives herself completely. To her family and to Gray.

Gray Bennett aka Most Eligible Bachelor, is a player as the title suggests. He keeps his job a secret in the small town his from and spends a great deal of time in New York City. While he was back in town visiting his dying father he saw Joy and found that she had transformed from the girl he used to know to a beautiful and sexy woman. And with her air of innocence he should be the last thing around her.'

OK, so I'll admit that the plot where the guy thinks he's no good for the girl and wants to stay away because he will only bring her heartache is good, but to a point. I think that was my only complaint with this book. Gray kept thinking he was bad for Joy. I wanted to slap him sometimes. But that at least didn't stop him from pursuing her. And then there's his trust issue because of seeing his own mother cheat on his dad. So two things that got on my nerves just a bit.

But as you can see the good far outweighs the bad. I thought this story was sexy as hell, Gray being so delicious probably helped. It was also sweet and I loved the fact that it was a completely different story than the first book. With all the society parties going on it had the feeling of a historical romance but set in current times.

I cannot wait to read the next one, although it seems I might be waiting. I'm spoiled and I want to listen to the audiobook like I did with the first two. Which means.... indefinete wait because there's no date announced for the re-release of the last Moorehouse sibling's story! Waaaaaaaaaaa

I didn't care for this one...
By C. Gore
To say I didn't like this book would be unfair. It's not that I did not like it, more that I was indifferent to it, the characters and the outcome and since I was almost half way through the book by the time I put it down (mid-way through chapter 7), that was a problem for me.

I've at time really enjoyed JR Wards writing and at other times been really annoyed by it. This is one of those time I was annoyed by it. The on and on narration was dragging a bit for me so I began skipping paragraphs and then whole pages. Gray's inner dialogue was annoying to me too, it just didn't mesh with the external persona he seemed to exhibit. The whole he's-with-her/she's-with-him misunderstanding was old by chapter 5, so that it was still partially going on in chapter 7 was REALLY old. So when I realized that I was half way into the book and didn't really care if these two ever or never got together, I decided it was time to put it down.

Mine is just one opinion, clearly a lot of other readers enjoyed this book. Personally, I'm just glad I borrowed it from the library instead of buying it.

BOB DYLAN: THE ESSENTIAL INTERVIEWS, by Jonathan Cott

Now in paperback -- the definitive collection of Bob Dylan's essential interviews from 1962 to the present

Dylan expert and longtime Rolling Stone contributor Jonathan Cott has compiled thirty-one interviews that, taken together, present the public transformation of a brilliant young man evading fame and its attendant invasion of privacy into a seasoned professional who has learned how to impart truth to those questioning him without giving away too much of his private self.

Included in Bob Dylan: The Essential Interviews are all six major interviews Rolling Stone conducted with Dylan, by Jann S. Wenner, Mikal Gilmore, Kurt Loder, and Cott himself. Other highlights include Nat Hentoff's legendary 1966 Playboy interview with the singer; Studs Terkel's 1963 radio interview on Chicago's WFMT; the interview Dylan gave to screenwriter Jay Cocks when Cocks was a Kenyon College student in 1964; a 1965 interview with director Nora Ephron; and an interview that Sam Shepard turned into a one-act play for Esquire in 1987. Each piece portrays Bob Dylan as an interview subject who, as Cott writes in his introduction, is "at once obviously reluctant, self-protecting, and self-concealing but equally often a stunningly direct, heartfelt, epiphanic, poetic, and, most important, playful expositor of his munificent and inspiring thought-dreams."

From Publishers Weekly
As an interview subject, Bob Dylan is notorious for his unpredictable moods and evasive, impish answers. Yet this priceless collection teems with honest, open, and thoughtful musings from a man described by editor Cott (Dylan; Back to a Shadow in the Night) as a "playful expositor of his munificent and inspiring thought-dreams." Organized chronologically, the interviews illuminate Dylan's changing views of music, life and his career, so readers can watch how a cocksure young man, reluctantly occupying the spotlight ("I'm really not the right person to tramp around the country saving souls," he told Playboy in 1966), remains forever uneasy with his status as he becomes one of the most influential musicians in history ("If I wasn't Bob Dylan, I'd probably think that Bob Dylan has a lot of answers myself," he tells Playboy in 1978). Most notable is Dylan's unwavering conviction in his instincts despite disapproval from other musicians, music critics and fans; after getting booed during his electric debut, he told Nora Ephron "They can boo till the end of time. I know that the music is real, more real than the boos." Those who have been touched by Dylan's songs will find this collection a fascinating window into his one-of-a-kind mind.

From Booklist
Bob Dylan has been interviewed probably thousands of times, yet especially because he has a reputation for being a difficult subject, particularly in his rebellious younger years, it is gratifying to discover how substantive and compelling music journalist Cott's 29 selections are. Included are most of the key conversations, from early sessions with sympathetic interlocutors Studs Terkel and Nat Hentoff to recent colloquies marking his majestic comeback albums, Time Out of Mind and Love and Theft. Other interviewers include self-proclaimed "Dylanologist" A. J. Weberman, notorious for rummaging through his subject's trash cans, and playwright Sam Shepard, who later turned his interview into a one-act play. Because the dates of the pieces distribute pretty evenly throughout Dylan's career, they roughly chronicle it. Interestingly, the book has a gap between 1971 and 1978, a period during which Dylan took to the media to defend his short-lived born-again Christianity. Informative and readable, the collection well complements Dylan's unexpectedly sincere memoir, Chronicles, Volume One (2004), which offered details that he shielded in his interviews. Gordon Flagg

Why only Limited Format?
By eclectic
Why is this fascinating book that features probably the best living songwriter in the world in his own words only available in this small print, bulky and heavy edition? I'm not as young as I used to be and my eyes don't work as well. In other words it's hard to read the print even with glasses. It's also difficult to carry this book around.

I wish it were available in Kindle where I could adjust the font to the size I need and would be lightweight as well. Chronicles is available in Kindle, as well as Suzy Rotolo's wonderful book A Freewheelin' Time and Keith Richard's masterpiece Life. Why not this book? It would be a way of attracting an even larger readership.

That aside, this is one of the best Dylan books ever. I much prefer the autobiographical style--which this book of Dylan interviews, while not fitting the usual description of an autobiography, is the next closest thing with Dylan answering questions from the beginning of his career through many years.

It's a must read for anyone who wants to know more about Dylan's history than any biography by an outsider who wasn't there through all of this could ever tell us.

But to the publishers, please release this book in Kindle.

Great Interviews
By Tammy Nates
This book is one of the best Dylan books that I've read. It begins with interviews in the early 60's when Dylan had just started to get noticed in the music world/folk scene, and they continue chronologically until 2004. The interviews give the reader a look at the emotions and thoughts of Bob Dylan through the eyes of many different reporters. However, most of the interviews are verbatim dialogue between Bob and the reporter. Bob starts out as an enthusiastic young man in the recording studio talking about his music and his tours. You begin to notice a shift in his thoughts in the mid to late 70's. He describes the making of his movie "Renaldo and Clara" and his thoughts seem unclear. However, it may simply be a look inside the mind of a genius. In addition, there are several interviews that discuss his conversion to Christianity. He seems obsessed with his new found religion. This phase quickly passes and the reader will begin to notice a shift to a more rational, thoughtful Bob Dylan. He begins to talk about his music and family (son, Jakob). Bob seems more sure of himself, his music, and his career in the late 90's and beyond. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!

A serial nonconformist
By Happy reader
I always love a good read about an interesting person. Filled with great poetry and musical talent, Bob is Bob and you have to love the fact he does and says what he wants not what the public wants. He may never play the same song the same way twice, why should he. He is who he is, love him or not at least he is true unto himself. I admire that in a person.

Good book...poor packaging
By mitz6011
I was happy to receive this book quickly. I needed it for work. I was dissapointed that the book was waterlogged when I opened it. Seems as though it was sitting in the rain, and was not packaged in plastic. After several days of letting the book dry, I finally got to read through it. I suppose this was more the fault of nature, but other book sellers packaged their products in plastic, now I can see how very important that is. Thanks for the book...use plastic next time.

Buddhism IS for Daily Life
By A Customer
I first read The Buddha in Daily Life when I first started to practice the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin. It is a very thought out book and explains the concepts and meanings this particular sect of Buddhism in an easy-to-understand way.
Written so that each section and chapter can be read on their own, it is great to just read the book from start to finish. You will find that all the answers you have ever been looking for in Buddhist are answered - from Life after Death, Cause and Effect, The 10 Worlds, Karma and the history of Buddhism.
The best aspect of this book is the way it brings it back into normal daily living. It explains how we can all live as Buddhists, that we are all Buddhas, and shows that we can strive for the ultimate happiness in our own lives, through our own actions.
I recommend this book to everyone as a first stop in the understanding of True Buddhism.

A fantastic book
By A Customer
This book is my favorite written introduction to Buddhism and one of my favorite references. I have been practicing Nicheren's Buddhism for fourteen years, and I think this book is both a clear explanation of Buddhism for someone who doesn't know much about it, and also wonderful for those who have been studying Buddhism for a while. The author did a fantastic job of clearly describing some deep concepts, and also the basics of Buddhist philosophy.

Excellent!
By Sarah Wellington
This is one of my favorite Buddhist books. It makes complex Buddhist theories easily applicable to our daily lives - teaching that enlightenment is not an unreachable goal but a real state of life. It encourages us that true happiness is available to each of us, here and now, just as we are. I also highly recommended "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life: A Little Book of Eastern Wisdom" by Taro Gold which contains many wonderful and rare quotations by the Buddhist teachers discussed in "The Buddha in Daily Life." Excellent!

In Holding Police Accountable, nine of todays leading scholars on police work examine seminal research on the use of force and how it can inform today's research. The volume celebrates the late James J. Fyfe, the preeminent scholar on police use of force. In 1978 Fyfe found that administrative controls—training, guidelines, and regulation—reduced deadly shootings by officers without adversely affecting law enforcement or crime rates. The finding not only had profound impact on firearms policy, but compelled police departments to cooperate with independent researchers. Here, the scholars pick up the torch to work toward effective yet fair policing that will better protect all Americans.

Review
The police have generally become more accountable and transparent over the years, but the work is far from complete. McCoy and her colleagues do a masterful job of refocusing our attention on this bedrock issue. In spite of the ever-increasing complexity of the work, police accountability has lately boiled down to reducing crime as measured by the FBI's Uniform Crime Report Part 1 statistics. This book is a thoughtful return to what police are supposed to be accountable to--not just crime statistics, but democratic principles. Bravo! --Darrel W. Stephens, Johns Hopkins University, Public Safety Leadership Program; Retired Chief of Police, Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina; and Former Executive Director, Police Executive Research Forum

Cops in the trenches know what good policing is, but getting there requires careful thought. Holding Police Accountable sparks such thought. It begins as a primer on the history of controlling the use of deadly force, but the reader soon discovers it covers much more. We need books like this to remind us of the centrality of accountability as we move forward with policing innovations. --Brian Forst, Professor, School of Public Affairs, American University

Trenchant essays by excellent scholars…. Holding Police Accountable details advances in police accountability spurred by policy-oriented litigation. Implications for control of less-lethal force are deeply explored here. --Merrick Bobb, President, Police Assessment Resource Center

Helpful Book, but Law Heavy
By Slyfive
This is a great book of case studies, and it is very informative. However, the language used is very law heavy, and informational. It is not what I would call a fun read, definitely geared more towards the very dull end of learning.

Review
"The 'doing' of sociology adds an excitement to the material and emphasizes the scientific elements of the discipline. Exploring real relationships requires a strong focus on critical thinking about issues, rather than accepting at face value the 'expert' presentation in standard textbooks."

"I like the opportunity to have them (the students) work with real data."

"I want undergraduate sociology students to learn about sociology as science. That means introducing them to patterned (not single instances) behavior, explanations for patterns, and research that tests explanations for the patterns."

About the Author
Rodney Stark is a renowned scholar and researcher, and is recognized as one of the foremost sociologists working in the field of sociology of religion. Professor Stark has published more than 140 articles and 27 scholarly books that have won numerous awards and acknowledgements, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination. He is also known as a pioneer in the technology field. He co-founded the MicroCase Corporation, which is now a part of Thomson Wadsworth. With his background in journalism, it isn't surprising that in addition to receiving praise for his unique approach to sociology, he's received praise for having one of the better-written texts on the market.

Outdated and Unhelpful. Difficult to find an intact copy.
By Aly13Gav
First of all, the workbook pages were missing and this has happened in 3 copies of this textbook that I have purchased. Even "new" books were often missing pages. I recommend trying to buy this book from Alibris or Abe Books. Honestly, professors need to stop assigning this book because it is outdated and unhelpful.

Great text book
By D. A McGuire
This text is easy to follow and as an intro to statistical & critical thinking it helps make a difficult subject very understandable.

Con: Do not buy a used book, the homework is suppose to be done in the book and even though my usedbook looked brand new it was missing 3 chapters.
