"There is a simplicity to this book that makes it a great read. It’s not trying to be clever or tricky, and it never feels like the moral of the story is being pushed on the reader either. The story flows nicely from beginning to end, and I liked that there were two characters each facing a different problem: one the physical barrier of riding a bike, and the other an emotional turmoil over being a good friend. About the Author
Kathryn Cole has a long career in children’s books as an illustrator, art director, editor, designer and publisher. The books she has overseen have won multiple awards, including four Governor General’s Awards. Kathryn volunteered as a support to parents for thirteen years with BOOST in its crisis-support and court-preparation groups. She is co-managing editor at Second Story Press and lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Qin Leng was born in Shanghai, China and lived in France before moving to Montreal. She now works as a designer and illustrator in Toronto and is the illustrator of a number of award-winning children’s books.

A Great story with a great lesson.

This story by Kathryn Cole has a great message for anyone who reads or hears it. Never Give Up is about a young boy named Shaun. He is trying to learn how to ride his bike. He still has training wheels on his bike but still falls off and hurts himself. His friend Nadia is sitting on the hill watching and when some other kids start to tease him and laugh when he falls she feels intimidated and is afraid to help him. Shaun does not give up and just keeps trying. The others finally get bored and leave. Nadia goes over to Shaun to apologize because she feels like a bad friend, and he tells her not to worry about it. He says he is not giving up and eventually will learn to ride. He tells her he is good at other things because he did not give up and kept trying until he became good at whatever he tried. Nadia goes home and enlists her dad to help Shaun learn to ride and it is a great success. Nadia asks Shaun if he will help her learn how to jump in when skipping. They have so much fun that even the kids that were teasing him before join in the fun.
The message of not giving up, helping your friends and even about being a bully are great ones. The skills used to teach the lessons (riding a bike, skipping) are easily identifiable to all children. The illustrations are well done and colourful. I recommend this book to families, school libraries and classroom libraries to teach children these valuable lessons.

This is an excellent book for children. When Nadia sees her friend Shaun having trouble riding his bike. He is teased by other kids about still having the training wheels. So, Nadia enlists her dad's help to help him learn to ride. He helps Shaun learn to ride his two-wheeled bike like a pro. Then Dad and Shaun help Nadia learn to jump rope. The book ends with both kids feeling much more confident, knowing the new skills they have. It's a wonderful story about the importance of not giving up, no matter what you are trying to do. I really enjoyed this book and love the lesson it teaches. It is also so good for older kids, maybe not teenagers, but the grade school/tween age.

Fantastic book with more than one moral to it.

Never Give Up - A story about Self-Esteem is a perfect book to illustrate the power of friendship, the affect your decisions can have upon your self-esteem, and how important determination is to accomplishing something. It is set for ages 5-8 years old, and speaks perfectly for that age group. The wearing of the hijab by the main character, whilst never even mentioned in the book, subtly goes against the undercurrent of anti-Muslim rhetoric. There is nothing in this book that could have been done better. Perfectly done, with simple illustrations that let the story take the forefront whilst still adding value to the book. I highly recommend this book.
