Simo Hayha (1905 - 2002) is the most famous sniper in the world. He is a sniper with a capital S. During the Winter War, which was fought between Finland and Soviet Union in 1939 - 1940, he obediently carried out the demanding tasks he was commanded to. He was one of the significant persons who created the Spirit of the Winter War by leading the way. He has been a role model for snipers all over the world and paved the way for them by showing their significance in the battlefield. He still holds the record of the snipers, 542 confirmed kills, with iron sights. Simo Hayha was a man of action who spoke very little. He was rewarded for his actions in many ways during and after the Winter War, the only war he ever participated in. He was promoted from corporal to second lieutenant and he was awarded the Cross of Kollaa (Kollaan Risti). He was also rewarded a Honorary Rifle, Sako m/28 on February 17 1940 at Kollaa front. For sniping Simo Hayha used his own m/28-30 rifle the whole time. Simo was wounded on March 6 1940. Tapio Saarelainen, the author of this book, is a career officer in the Finnish Army. He has spent two decades in training snipers. The author has spent lots of time investigating Simo's life and accomplishments and he's interviewed Simo dozens of times during 1997-2002.

Simo Hayha - Finland's leading sniper of the 1939-40 Winter War

This is a short biography of Simo H�yh� (1905 - 2002), one of the most famous snipers in the world. During the Dec 1939-1940 Winter War, whuch was the only war he fought in and which was fought between Finland and Soviet Union, H�yh� set a record of 542 confirmed kills, all made with iron sights.For sniping Simo H�yh� used his own m/28-30 rifle the whole time. Simo was wounded on March 6 1940. He was promoted from corporal to second lieutenant and he was awarded the Cross of Kollaa (Kollaan Risti).
Simo H�yh� lived two lives: The first one before the Winter War and the second one after his recovery. Simo got back on his feet and created long lasting career in farming and forestry. His roots were deep in the Finnish soil and he loved the life in rural Finland. He was also a master in breeding hunting dogs and he knew how to hunt small game and moose. He shot 73 moose, the last one in 1984.
Tapio Saarelainen, the author of this book, is a career officer in the Finnish Army. In his youth he competed in rifle shooting and he's spent two decades training snipers. The author has also participated in writing the Sniper's Manual for the Finnish Defence Forces from 2000-2003. The author has spent a lot of time investigating Simo H�yh�'s life and accomplishments and he interviewed Simo dozens of times during 1997 - 2002 and he says he's transferred Simo H�yh�'s trade secrets to the manual through this writing process.

So it's doubtful this book will be easily available. Kirjaporssi is a discounted book chain in Finland and have a website but don't seem to sell online.

Simo Hayha Biography

This is a nicely prepared summary of the life and military role of the Finnish Sniper, Simo Hayha of WWII. The book is high quality with an abundance of good photographs and documentation of the life of the most prolific sniper of all time. It discusses his life before, during and after WW II as well as details of his rifle, tactics and operational environment in which he fought. It is mostly a personal narrative by the author, who is a Finnish Army Officer. It also mentions Finnish rifle training, special sniper courses of fire and the environment a Finnish Sniper had to deal with. It is inspirational for anyone who may have to defend his life and his country against overwhelming odds and under extreme conditions of war. Personnaly, I wish it had contained a little more technical sniper related information, or greater discussion of tactics, but overall it was a good narrative. It does include some valuable information on how one, tiny, modest man could have eliminated 542 invading enemies armed only with a bolt action rifle and an enormous amount of skill and bravery.

A Tribute to White Death

This book is the story of the Finish WWII sniper Simo Hayha who had over 500 confirmed kills during the 1939-1940 Winter War against the Russians. He was nicknamed "White Death" by his Russian prey and held the record for the most recorded confirmed kills in any major conflict for a sniper. This book covers various aspects of his time as a sniper including how the Soviets tried several ploys to get rid of him, including counter-snipers and artillery strikes. As well the book covers various operations, training and weapons employed by Hayha. You will read that on one occasion "White Death" was shot in the jaw during combat operations by a Russian soldier. The bullet took out major section of his jaw, but this only slowed him down briefly. After making a full recovery he continued his military duty gaining the rank of second lieutenant. He also holds the record for making the fastest promotion in the Finish Army. This book is high quality oversize coffee table type book that is profusely illustrated with period photography. The only thing I wish is that the book covered more detailed information on Hayha in the text as this book is predominantly a pictorial. As a military sniper I highly recommend this book to the military historian and casual reader.
